Welcome to this edition of the 2025 WHL Prospect Pools. Throughout the 2025 off-season, we will be taking a look at current or recently graduated WHLers who have either been drafted or signed by NHL clubs. Today's organization is the Colorado Avalanche, which has two WHLers in its prospect pool.
The two WHLers in Colorado's system ended up with the Avalanche in very different ways. Edmonton Oil Kings' Max Curran was drafted during the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, while Spokane Chiefs' Saige Weinstein was an undrafted free agent signing back in 2023. So far, Curran and Weinstein have had successful WHL careers, which include developing skills that should help once they transition to the pro level.
Starting with Weinstein, he has spent his entire WHL career with the Chiefs. The 20-year-old defenceman has played 249 career regular-season games and helped Spokane qualify for the WHL Final this past season. Listed at 6'1", 190 lbs, Weinstein is projected to make the jump to the AHL next year, where he will be playing for the Colorado Eagles.
As for Curran, he is scheduled to return to the WHL next season, where he will be playing for the Oil Kings. Last season with the Tri-City Americans, the 18-year-old recorded 74 points in 65 games. Listed at 6'3", 187 lbs, Curran will be a player to watch for Czechia's 2026 World Juniors team.
