After finishing the season on a 40-game point streak, Gavin McKenna has been on a tear to start the playoffs. Through his first two games, the Medicine Hat Tigers forward has nine points, recording a goal and eight assists. Not only does McKenna lead the WHL in points, but also the entire CHL Playoffs.
While it is still early, McKenna is currently on pace to break the WHL's record for points in a single post-season. According to the WHL's record book, the current record is held by Regina Pats' Dale Derkatch, who recorded 53 points during the 1984 playoffs. Derkatch recorded 2.3 points per game that year while helping Regina make the WHL Championship.
After two games, McKenna is averaging 4.5 points per game. As good as McKenna is, he most likely won't be able to keep up this level of production, but he still should be able to get on the scoresheet on a nightly basis. That being said, if he somehow does keep playing at a 4.5 points per game rate, he would only need to play 12 games to beat Derkatch's WHL record.
Based on the way McKenna and the Tigers have started this post-season, it is hard not to imagine that they will be going on a long run this summer. They have outscored Swift Current 10-3 and have gone four for ten on the power play. If McKenna and his teammates can continue to rack up the goals, the 2026 projected first overall pick could add yet another WHL record to his resume.
