The UConn women's hockey team needed double overtime, but walked away as Hockey East champions defeating Northeastern 2-1 in a goaltending duel headlined by Tia Chan's 57-save performance

It took nearly five periods of hockey, but the UConn Huskies women's hockey team are Hockey East champions defeating Northeastern in double overtime 2-1.

The winning goal came off senior Kyla Josifovic's stick after a give and go play between Claire Murdoch and Ashley Allard. Murdoch got the first attempt, which was saved by Jonsson, but the rebound came directly to Josifovic who scored with 4:37 remaining in the second overtime period.

Both programs received outstanding goaltending with Connecticut's Tia Chan, a top three finalist for the NCAA's Goaltender of the Year Award made 57 saves in the victory, while Northeastern's Lisa Jonsson stopped 54 of 56 shots she faced.

Neither team scored in the first period before Connecticut's Sadie Hotles opened the scoring in the second. Northeastern's Rylie Jones replied on the power play before the frame was out, but that was all either team could manage in regulation.

Connecticut will now advance directly to the NCAA national championship tournament while Northeastern will need to hope for an open selection bid or their season is over.

The Hockey East final also set a new Hockey East final attendance record with the game drawing 2,168 fans. Tia Chan was named Hockey East tournament MVP.
