Canada Says "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" A Goal And A Gold

"Movie stars find the end of the rainbow with a fortune to win. It's so different from the world I'm living in."

Those are lyrics from Team Canada's goal song at the 2024 IIHF World Championships, ABBA's "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)." The difference is, Team Canada is saying gimme, gimme, gimme at the Worlds in Utica, New York for goals and a gold.

How did Canada choose their goal song?

"I feel like we went through a couple songs together during the Rivalry Series and that was just one that hit, we were all loving it," said Canadian forward Emma Maltais.

When that definitive choice came however, and who made the decision on Canada's goal song is a little less clear.

"I think it was picked at the Rivalry Series I wasn't at," said Sarah Fillier with a laugh. "Great song, I think it gets the girls going and I won't get tired of hearing it."

A Swedish pop song recorded in 1979, there little consensus or who made the final decision, and why "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" came to be. As each member of Team Canada asked asserted, the song came from the Rivalry Series. When Natalie Spooner was asked about the origin, she pointed to fellow veteran Jamie Lee Rattray. Rattray herself however, says she's not behind the goal song. Rather, Rattray claims "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" came to Canada more organically.

"I'm usually in the debate for the goal song, but that's been a goal song for us all year," said Rattray. "So I think it just continued on as as this tournament goes on."

"I just know that that's a very good song...that song was really popular with us in our room last year and I think it just kind of stuck."

Rattray also pointed to the song being a favourite at weddings attended by the team this summer, resulting in "a lot dancing going on to that song."

However Team Canada's 2024 goal song, ABBA's "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" came to be, the team hopes to hear it often as they strive for gold in Utica.
