Hungary missed the 2026 Olympic Games by a fraction of a second in one of the wildest ends to a hockey game you'll ever see. Germany's women's hockey team earned their way to Milano Cortina.
Germany led 2-1 into the final minutes, final seconds, and final milliseconds of their last Olympic Qualifying game against Hungary. It was a winner-goes-to-the-Olympics Game, and when the final buzzer sounded, neither team knew who was in, and who was out.
That's because in the last second of the game, Taylor Baker of Hungary found the puck on her stick, all alone in front of Germany's Sandra Abstreiter, and she beat her. Or at least Hungary thought they did. Germany on the other hand began celebrating earning a spot in the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics.
As it turned out, the puck did not cross the line prior to the final buzzer. Hungary missed a chance at the Olympics by the tiniest fraction of a second, while Germany punched their ticket.
Twin sisters Lilli Welcke and Luisa Welcke scored for Germany in the game, while Mira Seregely had Hungary's only goal. Sandra Abstreiter stopped 23 of 24 shots faced for Germany, while Hungary's Aniko Nemeth stopped 21 shots.
Sweden and Japan won the other Olympic Qualifier tournaments meaning Italy, Canada, USA, Sweden, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Finland, and Czechia are in, while the IOC has yet to rule on Russia. Should Russia not be permitted to enter the Olympics, Hungary could receive a spot as they are the top ranked nation not to qualify.
