The 2025 Esso Cup comes to a close today with an all Western final on the docket featuring the Edmonton Jr. Oilers and Saskatoon Stars.
Edmonton needed overtime to earn their way to the Esso Cup final, but they beat the hosts 1-0 outshooting them 51-22. After a scoreless regulation, Ciara Lang played hero scoring the overtime winner at 8:40 of overtime.
“It was a great game here tonight, it was crazy," said Lang. "The two teams were battling down the wire. We had a great effort by our group, our goaltender played unreal—I am just so happy that we got that goal. Lloydminster played a really good game; their goalie was phenomenal. We kept on pushing and hoping it was going to come. I am very excited that it came for us in overtime. Again, we are a close group, it feels like a family. We are very excited for tomorrow."
The North York Storm were hoping to improve upon their silver medal from the 2024 Esso Cup, but they'll be playing for bronze after the Saskatoon Stars beat the Storm 3-2 in the semi-final.
Mikayla Broadfoot scored two goals including the game winner with 5:34 remaining in the third period for the Stars. Sadie Green had the other goal for Saskatoon in the win.
"It was great to see our girls closing out and locking it down in the third period. It was a real sense of digging in and buying in," said Alana Serhan, Saskatoon's head coach. "It was also a matter of details in the game—we have a very strong core group. They have the ability to lead by example and then everyone picks up on that. That is an important part of our leadership group. As for tomorrow, we will get prepared, letting in the moment a little bit, realizing that everything we’ve done, all the hard work has paid off. We only got one more game left in our season, so we will do what we need to do to get it done"
