With the new professional women's hockey league offering roughly 138 roster spots, we look at where that line might fall for players from the PHF, PWHPA, NCAA, USports, and a handful of others.
The talent pool is massive. That's the good news for the new professional women's hockey league forming from the PWHPA and PHF for the 2024 season.
From the 98 women in the PWHPA, more than 160 in the PHF, dozens of graduating NCAA players, and handful of international free agents, the list of players who could make up a new league is large.
Original plans stated teams would feature 23 players. Discussions of a reserve list were also included in the collective bargaining agreement, so there will certainly be some players staying connected to rosters outside this core.
Assuming all teams carry a mix of three goalies, seven defenders, and 13 forwards, here's what the league lineup could look like. We've divided the lists into "probable" and "potential" candidates. In the "probable" list, we've chosen five teams worth of players, and listed the remainder as "potential."
It's not an exact science, and other names will certainly appear in the league who are not on this list, and some who are will also not play, but this is a hypothetical look at who could potentially be in, and who could potentially be out.
