The Minnesota Frost beat the Toronto Sceptres 4-3 in a shootout, riding Claire Thompson's two goals and three points, not including her shootout winner.
Claire Thompson is tied for the league lead in scoring with 14 points, and leads all defenders in points this season. Tuesday's two-goal, one assist performance was more than a boost to her individual numbers, it was a significant boost for the Minnesota Frost who downed the Toronto Sceptres 4-3 in a shootout.
Not only did Thompson score twice in regulation, she was also the deciding goal scorer in the shootout. It was an incredible performance for Thompson on her 27th birthday.
“It feels great, it was definitely a lot of fun in the game and I’m happy with the two points tonight," said Thompson of Minnesota's win. "It was getting opportunities to shoot the puck, and the power play was doing really well, and it was the playmaking ability of my teammates.”
“She's been outstanding, she’s obviously a tremendous puck mover, great skater and sees the ice well," said Minnesota Frost head coach Ken Klee of Thompson. "She’s a phenomenal person and I think we had a good idea of that when we brought her in and talked to people. She’s just a great add for us. We want to be a puck possession team and we want to make plays and I think that fits her style really well, so it’s been an awesome add for us.”
Minnesota's Michela Cava opened the scoring on the evening with Thompson and Heise assisting. For Cava, it was her sixth goal of the season, topping her season-long total from last year. The power play goal was the first of five markers that came with the player advantage on the evening.
Sarah Nurse answered back on a power play of Toronto's own in the first period. In the second, Thompson gave Minnesota their second lead of the game, but Toronto answered again as the clock flipped to the third as Jesse Compher found the back of the net.
After Thompson scored her second of the game, Renata Fast broke her goalless drought to even the game at 3-3 and send it to extra time.
After overtime solved nothing, and the teams traded goals in the shootout with Britta Curl-Salemme and Thompson scoring for Minnesota to earn the win.
