The PWHL held a formal announcement event at Climate Pledge Arena with members of the WNBA's Seattle Storm, local government, Seattle Kraken, and the PWHL on hand to celebrate the league's expansion to the city.
The new expansion team will play at Climate Pledge Arena sharing the venue not only with the NHL's Seattle Kraken, but also the WNBA's Seattle Storm. It will be the first time two professional women's sports teams share a venue in North American sports history.
"Today is a petty cool day for us, we grow to eight teams, we're now across the entirety of countries, we cover off two coasts, so a very proud day for our young league and we could not be more thrilled to be here," said PWHL executive vice president of business operations Amy Scheer.
Scheer referred to Seattle as the "capital of women's sports" with the city now featuring the WNBA's Seattle Storm, the NWSL's Seattle Reign, and now PWHL Seattle. The Storm are the first pro sports team own solely by women.
Scheer also spoke to the idea that there will now be a natural west coast rivalry between PWHL Vancouver, who were announced as an expansion team last week, and the newest franchise in Seattle.
