New York picked first overall last year selecting Sarah Fillier, and they'll pick first overall again this year.
One thing New York has no need for is defenders, meaning they'll be able to take swing after swing at forwards, and perhaps have the expanse in their freedom to shoot for the stars with a few later round picks. A second goaltender could be on the menu was well, and Hannah Murphy makes a lot of sense to be reunited with her former Colgate partner in Kayle Osborne, and coach in Greg Fargo.
After losing Alex Carpenter and Jessie Eldridge in expansion, New York needs scoring, and they need it now. Enter Kristyna Kaltounkova. That will be a major addition for this team. It's what they do after round one, however, that will really matter most. Picking at 9 and again at 17, New York is going to have a lot of options for forwards, and each of those picks will be upgrades to their current roster. Even at 25 and again at 33, New York will have shots at forwards with upside that could lift the spirits of their fan base, and with their depth on the blueline, who should have some chances to score. With one of their picks, New York will likely dip into the pool for either Hannah Murphy or Sanni Ahola.
Say it together now, Kristyna Kaltounkova. Conceivably New York could shock us all and go with Casey O'Brien, but the pure goal scoring, physicality, and ties to former Colgate coach Greg Fargo make Kaltounkova to New York feel obvious. Either way it's all about offense in New York so grabbing "Kalty" in the opening round makes sense.
New York has been all over the map. Their inaugural draft looked like a home run, which turned into a pop fly. Given their needs up and down the lineup, New York is likely to look at players from top NCAA programs who have faced stiffer competition. Ohio State has a group of players who would all help bolster New York's forward group, as does Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth. If Minnesota keeps their eyes tracked on those groups, there's hope for the team. Their ECAC ties are likely to play out as well, potentially in netminder Hannah Murphy. The same could be said for other top players like Abby Hustler and Anna Segedi from St. Lawrence, who are picks who could slide into New York's top six.
There's nothing wrong with going young, and New York is going to be young up front.
They picked first last year, and they again grabbed the first overall pick through the PWHL's gold plan this year. In the six round, 48 pick draft, New York will select with picks 1, 9, 17, 25, 33, and 41.
