You’ll be seeing much more of the iconic golden-eye around Vancouver this year.
The Vancouver Goldeneyes officially have a new jersey, the team revealed on a sunny Wednesday afternoon in Vancouver.
Vancouver wore the PWHL’s traditional expansion jerseys during their inaugural season, with that design featuring the team’s colour scheme of pacific blue, cream, and bronze, as well as ‘Vancouver’ draped diagonally down the front.
This year and beyond, they’ll retain the colour scheme but will add their logo (and a couple other fun elements) to their new kits.
The most noticeable new feature to the jersey is the streaks of bronze decorating the sleeves. Those draw the eye towards the V-shaped patterning pointing to the ends of the jerseys — both of which are calls to the Goldeneyes’ community and identity established in their inaugural season.
“The five earthy bronze lines on each arm sleeve invokes the wings of the common goldeneye and the team’s logo in a design element that is new to the PWHL,” Goldeneyes Director of Business Operations, Tania Richards, said at the jersey reveal. “Another PWHL first, the jersey has a dynamic V-shaped blocking on the lower sides, conveying motion and speed while alluding to both the ‘V’ in Vancouver and the team’s fan-favourite flying ‘V’ post-game celebration. In addition, the numbers on the back of each jersey are adorned with the silhouette of the logo’s eye.”
The jersey reveal comes after weeks of speculation around the Goldeneyes community, accompanied by a couple of early leaks of the jersey online.
Six members of the Goldeneyes were on hand at the jersey reveal on Wednesday. Vancouver local Jenn Gardiner, who has known about the jerseys for a couple of weeks, shared her thoughts on the new look.
“It was kind of exciting because we didn’t know what direction they were going to take it and how they were going to put the logo and bring it to life on these jerseys, but I think they did an amazing job in just the detailing on the numbers as well with the little goldeneyes on the back. I think it’s cool when you kind of break it down that way. It makes it more special.”
“I love what they added, the little details — the V, the stripes on the side, and even the numbering is so cool,” Goldeneyes captain Ashton Bell added. “They added so many cool touches to make it special to Vancouver and to our team. I’m obsessed with them and can’t wait to rep them here soon.”
“I love the eye. I feel like it catches your eye,” Goldeneyes forward Gabby Rosenthal mentioned. “I think it’s great to have the logo and people just know that’s the Goldeneyes.”
Goldeneyes fans will get to watch their team wear these new jerseys on December 5, during their home-opener against the Seattle Torrent.
