The Montreal Canadiens acquired Alex Newhook from the Colorado Avalanche. Rachel Doerrie breaks down why this is a good bet for a young team.

Montreal Canadiens GM Kent Hughes acquired a young player at the NHL Draft for the second straight year. The Canadiens acquired 22-year-old Alex Newhook from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for picks 31 and 37 in 2023, as well as Gianni Fairbrother.

The two draft selections are equivalent to a bag of magic beans. Hughes bought low on Kirby Dach last year and it turned out beautifully in year one. He's hoping that Newhook can play replicate that in an elevated role, and contribute offensively with opportunities he did not have in Colorado. A guaranteed NHL player that fits the core's average age is a good bet for Hughes.
