EDMONTON – Greatness.

It’s a word that describes a select few, no matter what the sport is.

The Edmonton Oilers have had their fair share of greatness walk through their dressing room. Wayne Gretzky is the ultimate embodiment of that, especially considering his nickname is “The Great One.”

Paul Coffey, Grant Fuhr, Mark Messier, and Jari Kurri are a few other greats who have donned the oil drop on their jerseys. However, a current Oilers player is making a name for himself in a big way.

Connor McDavid seems to set a new record or achieve a new milestone with each passing game. Since returning from injury, he has recorded seven assists in two games.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for McDavid. In his last 10 games, the Oilers’ captain has recorded 17 assists.

Connor McDavid, The Human Apple Tree

With McDavid’s four-assist effort to propel the Oilers past the San Jose Sharks on Friday night, he reached a new height. He recorded his seventh 70-assist season of his NHL career.

Only two players have recorded more than 70-assist seasons: Gretzky and Mario Lemieux. Like I said, he’s reaching new heights.

McDavid is already in the company of Gretzky for so many other milestones. They are both some of the fastest players to reach 1000 points and both are members of the select few who have scored 100 assists in a season.

No matter how you slice it, Oilers fans are watching greatness every night. McDavid is not Gretzky (and may never be) he’s a unique player who demands to be watched on a nightly basis.
