The Edmonton Oilers shook up their roster earlier today when they traded center Ryan McLeod and prospect Tyler Tullio to the Buffalo Sabres for 2022 ninth overall pick Matthew Savoie.
The trade has prompted lots of surprise online and praise for Oilers CEO of Hockey Operations Jeff Jackson. With this reaction we simulated the trade from both sides in NHL 24 to see if Franchise Mode felt the trade was lopsided.
McLeod recorded 30 points in 81 games last season and scored four goals in 24 games in the playoffs on Edmonton's run to the finals. Tullio was a fifth round pick of the Oilers in 2020 and has spent the last two seasons with Bakersfield of the AHL, he recorded 21 points in 54 games last season.
Savoie is the player in the trade with the highest pedigree, he was selected ninth overall by Buffalo in the 2022 draft and scored 71 points in 34 games in the WHL last season. He also had five points in six games with Rochester in the AHL.

When exploring this trade in NHL 24 Savoie's trade value more than doubled the value of McLeod and Tullio combined. Rated as Elite Medium potential, this trade is high upside for the Oilers.
Edmonton enthusiastically accepted the trade when we proposed it as Buffalo. The trade was emphatically denied when proposed as Edmonton. As Edmonton we attempted the trade again retaining 50% of McLeod's salary but were again denied.
NHL 24 thinks Edmonton got the better end of this deal, and knowing Edmonton got a ninth overall pick in return while needing to shed salary it is hard to disagree with.
