Following a tumultuous season of trades and suspensions, the defenseman’s KHL rights shift to CSKA Moskva, signaling a likely return to Russia to revitalize his professional career.
Yesterday, Columbus Blue Jackets' defensemen Egor Zamula's rights were traded in the KHL. This likely suggests that he will return home to Russia and join his new club.
Zamula, 26, had his rights held by Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, but they were dealt to CSKA Moskva. The deal also saw Boston Bruins' forward Georgii Merkulov go the other way in the trade.
He is coming off a very interesting season, where he started with the Philadelphia Flyers but was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Where he failed to report to their AHL club, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He was suspended and later released and then signed with the Blue Jackets to a prorated $1 million contract.
He ended last season with just three assists and a +6 rating in 33 games.
Zamula is expected to sign back in the KHL, after this deal took place yesterday. Which would give him a fresh start back in his home country, where he could reinvent himself. And, potentially, down the road make an NHL comeback.
