Canadian center Linden Vey, 33, has signed a one-year contract with the Vienna Capitals, the ICEHL club announced on Tuesday.

Vey split last season between Avangard Omsk in the KHL and Fribourg-Gottéron in Switzerland’s National League.

“My wife and I were looking for the best place to raise our family and for me to continue playing hockey at a high level,” said Vey. “After our discussions with the Capitals’ management, it quickly became clear to us that Vienna was the ideal place to continue my career.”

“I don’t need to say much about Linden Vey – his resume and success speak for themselves,” said Christian Dolezal, the club’s sports director. “He’s the missing piece of the puzzle in our offense and his skill level elevates the squad to a whole new level.”

Vey was born in Wakaw, Sask. and played junior hockey for the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers. He was drafted in the fourth round, 96th overall, by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. In the 2010-11 season, he led the entire CHL with 116 points.

Between 2013 and 2017, Vey recorded 44 points in 138 NHL regular-season games with the Kings, Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames. He also played one playoff game with the Canucks in 2015.

However, the club retains his KHL playing rights.

Internationally, he played for Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang for former Vancouver coach Willie Desjardins. Vey recorded one assist in six games and received a bronze medal.

Vey has played overseas since 2017, mostly in the KHL with Barys Astana, CSKA Moscow, SKA St. Petersburg and Omsk, but he’s also had stints in Switzerland with the ZSC Lions and Fribourg and in Germany with Adler Mannheim.

After finishing 11th and 10th in the multi-state International Central European Hockey League, or ICEHL, the Capitals are looking to improve their roster and Vey should slot in as the team’s top-line center and offensive leader.

“I’m a center who takes control of the game and consistently delivers in every game situation,” said Vey. “I’m looking forward to my time with the Vienna Capitals and will strive to set the best example for the organization every day.”
