Canadian center Linden Vey, 33, has signed a contract to play the remainder of the current season in Switzerland with Fribourg-Gottéron, the National League club announced on Monday.
The announcement came 10 days after Vey’s KHL contract with Avangard Omsk was terminated, although the club retained his KHL playing rights. The Omsk website at the time said that Vey had returned to Canada “to manage family issues.”
Vey had 19 points in 20 KHL games this season. He scored a goal in his last game on Oct. 31 in a 3-1 loss to Lada Togliatti.
“It is very satisfying to be able to sign a player in top form during the season,” said Fribourg-Gottéron sports director Gerd Zenhäusern. “Linden Vey is an experienced center whose offensive and defensive qualities are obvious. With seven imports now under contract, our roster is stronger.”
Fribourg currently sits 11th in the 14-team National League standings with 22 points in 19 games and has won only once in its last five games. Fribourg plays the first leg of its Champions Hockey League round of 16 tie on Tuesday in Sweden against the Växjö Lakers, but there’s no indicated timeline for Vey’s debut with the team.
Between 2013 and 2017, Vey recorded 44 points in 138 NHL regular-season games with the Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames. He also played one playoff game with the Canucks in 2015.
However, Fribourg’s roster contains four players with more NHL experience than Vey – Swedes Jacob de la Rose, Marcus Sörensen and Lucas Wallmark and Spanish-Swiss defenseman Raphael Díaz.
