The first day of the NCAA Tournament didn't disappoint. With the Toledo and Fargo Regionals underway, here's a recap of the action from day one.
The Terriers scored five unanswered goals in the third period after being outshot 15-2 in the first stanza. Freshman netminder Mikhail Yegorov made 33 saves for BU and senior Logan Terness stopped only 15 of the 22 shots he faced.
Freshman forward Cole Eiserman scored twice for the Terriers in Toledo on Thursday afternoon, pushing his season tally to 23. Freshman blueliner Cole Hutson scored and picked up three assists for BU.
Graduate forward Joe Dunlap scored twice for the Buckeyes in the loss. BU will play for a third straight Frozen Four berth on Saturday.
With 10 seconds left in regulation, senior forward Sullivan Mack buried a power play goal to lift Cornell over Michigan State.
The Spartans, the second overall seed, squandered a third-period lead in the loss. Sophomore Trey Augustine made 17 saves, and senior Ian Shane was excellent for the Big Red, stopping 34 shots.
Head coach Mike Schafer's final season at the helm will continue with a third straight trip to the regional final for Cornell, who will take on BU on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Sophomore forward Grant Slukynsky played hero for the Broncos on Thursday in Fargo, burying the winner for Western Michigan.
Grant's younger brother, Hampton Slukynsky, a freshman netminder, made 28 saves in the win. Junior Alex Tracy did all he could for the Mavericks, stopping 42 shots.
Junior forward Liam Valente's impressive season continued on Thursday for the Broncos. He tallied a goal and an assist on the winner. Western Michigan's quest for its first national championship will continue on Saturday.
The Minutemen capped off a three-goal, third-period comeback in overtime courtesy of sophomore forward Aydar Suniev's second goal of the night.
Sophomore netminder Michael Hrabal made 25 saves for UMass in the win, and graduate Liam Souliere stopped 32 shots in the loss.
Junior forward Jimmy Snuggerud scored twice for the Golden Gophers in what could have been his final collegiate game. The Minutemen will face Western Michigan for a spot in the Frozen Four on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
