Hutson remains tethered to his collegiate roots while navigating life in Washington
Cole Hutson had a remarkable collegiate career across just two seasons at Boston University. He won the 2025 Tim Taylor Award as Freshman of the Year, helping the Terriers lead to the 2025 National Championship game. Hutson was also named an All American his freshman and sophomore seasons.
He continued to thrive on the international stage. Hutson won a 2025 World Junior Championship representing Team USA, scoring a tournament high 11 points (3 goals + 8 assists). The following World Juniors, Huston served as an alternate captain on Team USA.
The 43rd Overall Pick in 2024 signed his Entry Level Control following his 2025-26 Sophomore season. Hutson scored in his first NHL game on March 18, 2026.
His passion for the Terriers remains palpable even after leaving for Washington. "I'm going to be BU's biggest fan," Hutson told me at the 2026 NHLPA Rookie Showcase presented by Upper Deck. "I think just be as supportive as you can. I am still texting with guys every day. Miss them a lot."
Despite being in D.C., Hutson is still very invested in his former institution. Hutson revealed that he plans on returning to Boston University next offseason. "I'll be back there next year for summer school to try and finish (my degree)." He is majoring in hospitality per The Hockey News' Sammi Silber.
Going forward, there is no easy way for the Terriers to fill Hutson's void on their blue line. Their most likely candidate is Xavier Villeneuve who played a similar style in the QMJHL. He collected a number of awards including 2024 QMJHL Defensive Rookie of the Year, 2025 QMJHL Defenseman of the Year. Chicago drafted Villeneuve 34th Overall this past summer and will enter Boston University after averaging over a point per game in his age out year.
Both of Hutson's older brothers, Quinn and Lane, played for the Terriers. Quinn is with the Edmonton Oilers organization while 2025 Calder Trophy winner Lane needs no introduction. Cole explained how Boston University will always hold a special place in heart. He put it simply saying "I treat it like home." It's clear that wherever Hutson goes, he will carry Beantown with him.
