One of the top NHL coaching candidates is taking on a management role with Team Canada as the organization announced new additions to its women's program.
Hockey Canada announced a few additions to the management group of Team Canada's women's program.
Kori Cheverie was named the head coach of the women's team, Michael Hirshfeld and Manon Rheaume were named assistant GMs of the program and Stanley Cup-winning head coach Bruce Cassidy will serve as a special advisor to the organization.
Cassidy is coming off a four-year tenure with the Vegas Golden Knights. He was let go by the team late last season, being fired on March 29, making room for John Tortorella.
Since then, Cassidy has expressed interest in coaching in the NHL again, but the Golden Knights organization has been holding his services back. The Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings were interested in interviewing Cassidy for their previously vacant positions, but Vegas did not give those clubs permission.
The Golden Knights have the power to hold him back because he is technically still under contract with the team, even if he has been fired.
At any rate, this is a new role for him. He has contributed to Team Canada before, but in the role of an assistant coach for the men's team at the 4 Nations Face-Off and the 2026 Olympics.
Cheverie is the head coach of the Montreal Victoire since they formed in 2023-24, and also has experience with the national team. For the past five IIHF World Championship tournaments, she has been an assistant coach for the team. She was also an assistant coach for Canada at the 2026 and 2022 Olympics.
Hirshfeld joins Team Canada's front office as the GM of the Ottawa Charge, and since they formed. And Rheaume is the GM of PWHL Detroit, with their inaugural season upcoming for 2026-27. She was also a team consultant for the Kings from 2022-23 to 2025-26.
