The Detroit Red Wings have found an internal candidate to replace Steve Yzerman on an interim basis ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The Detroit Red Wings have named a temporary replacement in the front office for former general manager Steve Yzerman.
Former NHLer Shawn Horcoff has been named as the team's interim GM, the Red Wings announced Tuesday.
Horcoff has been part of the Red Wings' staff for nearly a decade, serving as the team's director of player development for six seasons before being named as assistant GM under Yzerman in 2022, while spending three seasons as assistant director of player personnel.
"As our process continues to find the best possible leader for Red Wings hockey operations, I’m appreciative of Shawn for stepping up to serve in this capacity," said Red Wings Governor and CEO Chris Ilitch in a statement.
"His knowledge of our organization and range of experience allows us to operate with a clear decision-maker in place for the season ahead, while maintaining our commitment to carry out a thorough, methodical search process on our own timeline."
Yzerman stepped down as general manager on July 15, 2026, after spending seven years in the front office. Along with this announcement, the Red Wings shared that Yzerman will now transition to the role of Senior Advisor to the Governor and CEO.
Ilitch added that while Horcoff's title is listed as interim, he will be under consideration for the permanent role, noting that the organization has attracted "significant interest" in their search for a permanent hire along with a head of hockey operations position.
"Identifying and hiring the right leader is essential to our franchise's future," Ilitch said. "We remain committed to being deliberate and thorough in this process. We're grateful for our players, staff, and fans for their support as we work toward this pivotal hire."
This news comes just days before Red Wings training camp opens, with Dylan Larkin having publicly requested a trade and restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson remaining unsigned.
