Chris Kreider is an unrestricted free agent after the Anaheim Ducks terminated his contract. Where he might end up is the subject of speculation for pundits, while his addition to the UFA market could complicate efforts for other available forwards to land new contracts.
On Wednesday, the Anaheim Ducks placed Chris Kreider on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract by mutual agreement. The 35-year-old winger cleared waivers the following day, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Kreider had a bounce-back performance with the Ducks last season after a disappointing campaign with the New York Rangers in 2024-25. He finished fourth among Ducks scorers with 22 goals and sixth with 50 points.
At the time of his contract termination, Kreider had a year remaining on his deal worth an average annual value of $6.5 million, though his actual salary was $4 million.
For the Ducks, removing Kreider’s cap hit gives them $15.5 million in cap space. That should be enough to sign restricted free agent Cutter Gauthier to what is expected to be an expensive new contract.
Kreider reportedly wants to return to the Eastern Conference to be closer to his family, who live in the New York area. That prompted some pundits to speculate about his potential destinations.
Michael DeRosa of The Hockey News suggested the Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Carolina Hurricanes as landing spots. Bleacher Report’s Joe Yerdon proposed the New York Islanders, Pittsburgh Penguins, or a return to the Rangers.
The Score’s Josh Wegman included the Philadelphia Flyers on his list. Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now examined why it would make sense for the Red Wings to sign Kreider, as well as why it wouldn't.
Most of those teams need scoring depth at even strength or on the power play. Despite his age and his long career, Kreider could be a good short-term addition on an affordable one-year contract, perhaps around the $4 million he would’ve drawn this season on his previous deal.
Kreider probably won’t have to wait long to land with a new club. However, his sudden presence in the UFA market could be a setback for several notable forwards still waiting for deals. They include scoring wingers Vladimir Tarasenko, Patrik Laine, James van Riemsdyk, and David Perron.
