The New York Rangers claimed left winger Tye Kartye off NHL waivers from the Seattle Kraken on Friday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported and the team confirmed.
Kartye was one of two players placed on the waiver wire on Thursday. St. Louis Blues right winger Mathieu Joseph cleared and is eligible to be assigned to the AHL.
The Rangers added a 24-year-old from Kingston, Ont., who has three goals and five assists for eight points in 40 games this season.
Kartye made his NHL debut with the Kraken in the 2022-23 playoffs, where he impressed with three goals and five points in 10 games.
Since then, Kartye has served as a serviceable bottom-six forward who hits frequently, plays a secondary role on the penalty kill and scores occasionally. With 98 hits and an average ice time of 10:42, Kartye averages 13.73 hits per 60 minutes.
Overall, he has 20 goals and 21 assists for 41 points in 180 career regular-season games.
As the Rangers retool, Kartye can play a depth role if they sell veterans by the March 6 NHL trade deadline. He also has one more season left on a two-year contract with a $1.25-million cap hit before becoming an RFA, so he's a short-term project for the Blueshirts as well.
When Kartye graduated to the pro level after three seasons with the OHL's Soo Greyhounds, he had a very promising AHL rookie campaign with the Coachella Valley Birds in 2022-23. That season, he had 28 goals and 29 assists for 57 points in 72 games. That earned him a call-up to the Kraken in the post-season, and he's mainly been in the NHL ever since, aside from a three-game AHL stint last season.
No new players were placed on waivers Friday.
