The Ottawa Senators traded the No. 9 pick to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for William Eklund, Kasper Halttunen and Brandon Svoboda.

The Ottawa Senators acquired William Eklund from the San Jose Sharks two days after trading Brady Tkachuk.

Ottawa receives Eklund, right winger Kasper Halttunen and the rights to prospect center Brandon Svoboda from the Sharks in exchange for the ninth overall pick in the 2026 NHL draft. The No. 9 pick originally came from the Florida Panthers in Sunday's Tkachuk trade.

Eklund, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound left winger, had 15 goals and 38 assists for 53 points in 78 games with the Sharks this season.

The 23-year-old has 252 career games across five seasons, three as a full-time NHLer. The No. 7 pick in the 2021 NHL draft is known for his intelligence on the ice, two-way play and playmaking abilities.

Halttunen, 21, had 16 goals and 35 points in 69 AHL games this season after finishing his major junior career with the Memorial Cup-winning London Knights last year. San Jose selected the 6-foot-3, 215-pound forward 36th overall in 2023.

Svoboda, a seventh-round pick in 2023 who remains unsigned, had six goals and 15 points in his second season with Boston University. He's 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds.

Combining their two trades this week, the Senators have brought in Eklund, Halttunen, Svoboda, the No. 25 pick in Friday's NHL draft and a top-10 protected 2029 first-round pick, and they've sent out Tkachuk, a star power forward who had 59 points in 60 games this year.

As for the Sharks, they now have the second, ninth, and 20th overall picks in the 2026 draft.

After speculation regarding whether the Sharks would select a forward or a defenseman second overall, they have now traded one of their top two left wingers. At least one of two left wingers, Gavin McKenna and Ivar Stenberg, will be available when they're on the clock with the second selection.
