On Friday morning, the Anaheim Ducks traded a fifth-round draft pick to the Colorado Avalanche for Ben Meyers
Friday morning, the morning of the NHL Trade Deadline, the Anaheim Ducks traded a 2024 fifth-round pick to the Colorado Avalanche for forward Ben Meyers.
Meyers (25) is in his second full season playing professional hockey after a successful NCAA career at the University of Minnesota. In 2023-24, Meyers had scored 11 goals and 14 assists in 34 AHL games for the Colorado Eagles. He also had a goal in nine games in the NHL for the Avalanche this season.
In 2022-23, Meyers played 30 games for the Colorado Eagles under now Ducks head coach, Greg Cronin. In those 30 games, he found some success, scoring 24 points.
He’s had a rough transition to the NHL and is still trying to find how he can be most effective at the highest level. He’s managed six goals in 53 career NHL games since the end of the 2021-22 season when he signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Minnesota.
Meyers scored 95 points in 102 games playing for the University of Minnesota in his NCAA career. He was a Hobey Baker Award finalist in his Senior year when wore the “C” and scored 17 goals and 24 assists in 34 games. If and when he makes his Ducks debut, he will be reunited with his teammate for his three years at Minnesota, Jackson LaCombe.
Meyers represented the United States at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing. He tallied two goals and two assists in four games and played with San Diego Gulls (Anaheim Ducks AHL affiliate) defenseman, Drew Helleson.
In the Summer of 2022, he again represented his country at the IIHF World Championships in Finland. There, he co-led the United States in scoring with four goals and four assists in 10 games as his team lost the Bronze Medal game to Czechia.
Meyers, the 5-foot-11 forward, is a highly competitive, versatile, and skilled player. He is tenacious in battles and fights his way to the front of the net. He has good hands in tight spaces on the ice and motors to win pucks back. If he can find his game at the NHL level, he can provide quality depth scoring for a long time.
