The start of free agency is right around the corner, as July 1 is less than a week away. The Boston Bruins are going to be a team to watch incredibly closely during it, as they have a ton of money to work with.

Bringing in at least one top-six winger should be among the Bruins' top goals of the summer. Winnipeg Jets star Nikolaj Ehlers has been viewed as a potential player the Bruins could pursue, as he is this year's top pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) left winger. The Bruins, of course, need another top-six left winger after trading Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers at the deadline.

If the Bruins have an interest in Ehlers, they will now have the opportunity to pursue him once free agency opens. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Ehlers has confirmed to the Jets that he will test the free-agent market on July 1. However, Friedman also noted that Ehlers has not completely shut the door on re-signing with Winnipeg.

Ehlers electing to test the market is not particularly surprising. With him being among the NHL's best free agents this summer, he should have plenty of suitors on July 1. This, of course, will raise his value, and he should land a big contract because of it. With the Bruins having money to work with and a need for another star, they are in a position to make a major push for Ehlers.

If the Bruins signed Ehlers, he could be a perfect fit on their first line with Pavel Zacha and David Pastrnak. Yet, if they wanted to spread out their offense a bit, he would also be very effective in a second-line role for the Bruins. In addition, his offensive skill would make him a big-time addition to the Bruins' power play if signed.

Ehlers is also known for being an incredibly consistent player, as he has scored at least 20 goals in eight out of his 10 NHL seasons and has hit the 60-point mark four times. This includes this season, as he had 24 goals and 63 points in 69 games.

With Ehlers officially hitting the market and being right in his prime at 29 years old, the Bruins should seriously consider making a push for him. They need more impactful, skilled forwards, and signing Ehlers would provide them with just that.

The 26-year-old is coming off a strong 2024-25 season, as he recorded new career highs with 33 goals, 24 assists, and 57 points in 77 games. With this, getting him signed to a new contract should be one of the Bruins' biggest objectives of the summer.
