They have not shut the door on promoting interim head coach Joe Sacco for the full-time position. However, management has confirmed that they are considering all of their options before making their decision.
Now, the Bruins have a new option to potentially consider for their head coaching job. On April 28, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced that they and head coach Mike Sullivan have agreed to part ways. With this, Sullivan is now one of the top free-agent coaches on the market and will undoubtedly have several suitors. But will the Bruins be among them?
Sullivan is somebody the Bruins know very well. He previously coached the Bruins for the 2003-04 and 2005-06 seasons, where he had a 70-56-15-23 record behind the bench. The Massachusetts native also played for the Bruins as a player during the 1997-98 season, posting five goals and 18 points in 77 games.
Sullivan undoubtedly has had plenty of success as a head coach since his stint with the Bruins ended. In 10 seasons as the Penguins' bench boss, he had a 409-255-89 record and led Pittsburgh to back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017.
With Sullivan being one of the best coaches available, it is fair to wonder if the Bruins could look to reunite with him. He is also Bruins star Charlie McAvoy's father-in-law, which makes the possibility of a reunion even more intriguing.
Nevertheless, we will need to wait and see if the Bruins end up having Sullivan among their top candidates from here.
