With training camp right around the corner, Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman remains without a contract. This has naturally caused stress among Bruins fans, and that is expected to remain the case for at least a bit longer.
While speaking with The Boston Globe's Kevin Paul Dupont at the Prospects Challenge on Saturday, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney revealed no significant updates on the progress of Swayman's next deal. In addition, all he said to Dupont was, "Kick it down the road. We'll talk (with Swayman) next week."
The Bruins start training camp on Sept. 18, so Sweeney not having any positive updates regarding the Swayman negotiations is concerning. Unless Swayman and the Bruins make sudden and serious progress on a new deal, the Original Six club could begin training camp without the star netminder. Given that the Bruins traded Linus Ullmark this offseason, not having Swayman for at least the start of training camp would be far from ideal for Boston.
If Swayman is officially not signed to a new deal over the next few days, they will start training camp with offseason addition Joonas Korpisalo as their top goalie. In addition, goalie prospect Brandon Bussi will look to impress. However, neither goalie is at Swayman's level, so here's to hoping that the Bruins can get him signed quickly.
Swayman, 25, appeared in 44 regular-season games for the Bruins in 2023-24, posting a 25-10-8 record, a .916 save percentage (SV%), and a 2.53 goals-against average (GAA). While it was a strong regular season for Swayman, he took his game to a new level during the playoffs, recording a .933 SV% and a 2.15 GAA.
