    Former Buffalo Sabres defenseman Will Butcher will be continuing his professional career overseas. The left-shot defenseman signed a one-year contract with Barys Astana of the KHL. 

    Butcher, 29, last appeared in the NHL during the 2021-22 season with the Sabres. In 37 games with the Atlantic Division squad, he posted two goals, six assists, and a minus-10 rating. 

    After his lone season as a Sabre, Butcher played the next two seasons split between three AHL clubs. During this past season in the AHL, he had six goals and 16 points in 38 games split between the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Iowa Wild.

    Butcher played five seasons in the NHL, where he had 16 goals and 114 points in 275 games. The 2017 Hobey Baker Award winner's best season came in 2017-18 when he had five goals and 44 points in 81 games with the New Jersey Devils as a rookie.
