Earlier this season, former Buffalo Sabres forward Wayne Simmonds told The Canadian Press' Joshua Clipperton that he wasn't planning to continue his NHL career but did not officially retire.
Yet, things have now changed on that front, as Simmonds has officially announced his retirement from the NHL. He is also set to sign a one-day contract with the Philadelphia Flyers and be honored by the club on April 13 against the New Jersey Devils.
Simmonds, 35, is most remembered for his time as a Flyer. He spent eight seasons with the organization as a top-six power forward, posting 203 goals and 378 points in 584 games.
Following his time with the Flyers, Simmonds became quite the journeyman, as he had stops with the Nashville Predators, Devils, Sabres, and Toronto Maple Leafs from 2018-19 to 2022-23. He also played his first two seasons in the NHL (2008-09 & 2009-10) with the Los Angeles Kings.
Wayne SimmondsThe Sabres acquired Simmonds before the 2020 NHL Trade Deadline for a 2021 fifth-round pick (Topias Vilen). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he played just seven games for Buffalo, posting one assist and 17 hits.
