The Buffalo Sabres are gearing up for what should be an interesting 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. While they very well could ship off some of their pending UFAs, there also has been talk that they could look to add players who would help them beyond this season.
In the most recent episode of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, NHL insider Jeff Marek had this to say about the idea of Philadelphia Flyers forward Scott Laughton potentially being a target for the Sabres: "I wonder about a team like the Buffalo Sabres as well for Scott Laughton. Again, maybe the offseason, but that's probably a team that's looking for a little bit more snarl and some veteran presence."
Scott LaughtonCoincidentally, I also brought up the idea of Laughton being a possible fit for the Sabres early this morning (Feb. 9), noting that he would give them more skill to go along with some grit. This is a clear need for the Sabres.
However, Marek also raised a great point about how Laughton would give them another experienced player on their roster. This would be excellent, as he would be a good mentor for their rising players. With that, he is known for his leadership qualities, which is why he's sporting an 'A' on his jersey in Philadelphia.
Laughton, 29, is under contract until the completion of the 2025-26 season and carries a $3 million cap hit. As a result, he would be more than a rental for the Sabres if acquired, whether that be before the deadline or during the offseason.
Scott Laughton While the Sabres are not confirmed to be linked to Laughton, there's no question that they could use a player like him. It will be fun to see if they end up making a push for him because of it.
In 52 games this season with the Flyers, Laughton has five goals, 20 points, and 86 hits.
