With the Sabres looking to add a top-six winger, Jonathan Marchessault should grab their attention.
NHL free agency begins next Monday, so we are getting to the busiest time of the year. Teams around the NHL will all have the chance to add new talents to their roster, and the Buffalo Sabres should be active. After extending their playoff drought to 13 years, the Sabres will undoubtedly look to add impactful players to their roster.
One specific need that the Sabres have is another top-six scoring winger. This will be especially true if the Sabres officially buy out veteran forward Jeff Skinner. Thankfully, this year's free agency class could offer some great options. Jonathan Marchessault is one specific player they should have on their radar if he hits the market.
The possibility of Marchessault staying with the Golden Knights isn't completely dead, but with free agency getting so close, it is starting to look pretty possible that he will hit the market. Given the Sabres' need for an impactful veteran scorer in their top six, he would be a prime target for them if he does.
Marchessault, 33, had a fantastic season for the Golden Knights in 2023-24, posting 42 goals - a new career high - to go along with 69 points and 107 hits. This was after he recorded 13 goals and 25 points in 22 games during the Golden Knights' 2023 Stanley Cup run. He also, of course, won the Conn Smythe as the playoff's MVP.
Adding a skilled winger who is incredibly clutch would be significant for a Sabres team aiming to take that next step. Because of this, if Marchessault hits the market on July 1, he should be one of the players Buffalo seriously considers contacting.
