The Sabres have an intriguing target from the Avalanche.
With the NHL Entry Draft and free agency rapidly approaching, trades around the league are starting to pick up. Yet, once the Stanley Cup Final is officially over, we will see moves occur far more frequently.
One player who has been starting to create some chatter as a top trade candidate is Colorado Avalanche forward Ross Colton. With the Avalanche needing to free up cap space, Colton and his $4 million cap hit could be expendable for the right price. However, the Avalanche would need to move him soon if they are hoping to, as his full no-trade clause kicks in on July 1.
With the Buffalo Sabres looking to upgrade at the third-line center role, Colton stands out as a prime trade target for them.
Colton would greatly improve the Sabres' third line. He provides solid secondary scoring, plays a steady defensive game, and has plenty of grit. In addition, at 27 years old, he is entering his prime, which naturally raises his appeal.
Colton is coming off a strong season with the Avalanche, posting 17 goals and a career-high 40 points. He also made an impact with his tenacious style of play, recording 141 hits.
The Sabres want to take that next step and end their 13-year playoff drought, so it would make sense to add a former Stanley Cup champion like Colton. Let's see if they enter the sweepstakes from here.
