Sabres Interested in Ex-Maple Leafs Defender

The Buffalo Sabres are reportedly one of four teams targeting this veteran defenseman.

The Buffalo Sabres have a good amount of cap space to work with as we inch closer to the start of the 2024-25 season. They only have one restricted free agent, Peyton Krebs, who is not in a position to command too much money, so the Sabres can absolutely add to their roster if they wish to.

One clear need the Sabres possess is another top-six winger. While this is the case, it also appears that they are open to improving their defensive depth. The Sabres are one of four teams that have expressed Mark Giordano this offseason. Giordano’s agent, Ritch Winter, shared this during a recent appearance on Sportnet’s Flames Talk.  

According to Winter, the other teams who have expressed interest in Giordano are the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and Calgary Flames. 

While the Sabres certainly possess a solid defensive group, it makes sense that they are also open to adding Giordano. His past captain experience would make him an excellent mentor for the club's younger defenders, like Owen Power, Bowen Byram, Rasmus Dahlin, and Mattias Samuelsson. 

Giordano, 40, appeared in 46 games last season for the Maple Leafs, posting three goals, nine points, 51 hits, and a plus-10 rating. The former Norris Trophy winner would give them another serviceable option for their bottom pairing if signed.

We will need to wait and see if the Sabres' interest in Giordano leads to them signing him from here.
