The Calgary Flames have recalled forwards Aydar Suniev and Jonathan Costagna from the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers.
The recalls come one day after the Flames placed Connor Zary and Brayden Pachal on waivers, with both players clearing and subsequently being assigned to Calgary’s AHL affiliate.
For Suniev, the recall comes after a strong preseason that had many viewing him as the next forward in line for an NHL opportunity.
The 21-year-old impressed offensively during the preseason, scoring three goals in two games while adding another goal in the rookie NextGen Game against the Edmonton Oilers to open training camp.
Suniev was then assigned to the Wranglers to begin the season, where he recorded one assist through two games.
Now, he gets another opportunity to be around the NHL club and potentially make his regular-season debut.
Costagna is getting his first taste of the NHL after opening the season with a strong start with the Wranglers.
The 21-year-old forward has scored twice in two games and carries a plus-3 rating into his recall.
Costagna averaged a point per game last season at Cornell University, with 34 points (15g, 1a) in 34 games, putting together a strong NCAA campaign before the Flames acquired him from the Utah Mammoth in the trade that sent MacKenzie Weegar and Olli Maatta to Utah.
If Costagna gets into the lineup, it would mark his NHL debut.
The two recalls give the Flames some additional forward depth as the club continues to navigate its roster following a difficult start to the 2026-27 season.
For Suniev in particular, the recall represents another step in a development path that appeared to be trending toward an NHL opportunity after his impressive preseason. Now, he will get another chance to show the Flames he is ready for it.
