Calgary Flames defenseman Olli Määttä just won a World Championship with Finland, getting one Olympic Gold Medal closer to the exclusive Triple Gold Club.

On May 31, 2026, Finland captured their fifth World Championship, thanks in part to the return of future Hall of Famer and captain Aleksander Barkov. However, there were 14 NHL players in the lineup, including Calgary Flames defenseman Olli Määttä

By adding a World Championship to his resume, Määttä is now only an Olympic Gold Medal away from joining the Triple Gold Club. Initially drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins as the 22nd overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, he would go on and be a part of the club's back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2016 and 2017.

Most recently, the 31-year-old from Jyväskylä, Finland, came to Calgary from the Utah Mammoth in the MacKenzie Weegar deal. In 21 games, he scored two goals and had 13 points to finish as the team's fourth-highest scoring defenseman.

Through 13 seasons in the NHL, Määttä has skated in 804 games, scoring 219 points with six different clubs.

Internationally, he's been representing Finland on the world stage since 2009-10, when he skated with the U16 team. While being named to the U18 and U20 teams in 2010-11 and 2011-12, Määttä was an alternate captain. During his NHL rookie season, 2013-14, he was selected to the Finnish Olympic Team and won a bronze medal before capturing a second bronze medal at the 2026 Games.

As a two-time Top 3 Player on Team winner in IIHF competitions, Määttä also won a World Championship silver medal in 2021. In addition to those accolades, he's a two-time OHL champion and earned OHL First All-Rookie Team honors in 2012.

Considering that he'll only be 36 at the time of the next Winter Olympics, with his experience and championship pedigree, there's a good chance that Määttä earns another shot at a gold medal in 2030 with Finland and joins the Triple Gold Club in the process.
