The Hurricanes captain hit the ice Saturday after a partial calf tear, eyeing a potential return for the upcoming Global Series matchup against Seattle in Finland.
Saturday morning brought some good news for the Carolina Hurricanes as captain Jordan Staal resumed skating, joining the team for practice for the first time since getting injured on Oct. 11.
Staal, 38, has missed nearly a months worth of games since suffering a partial calf tear during warmups before a game in Philadelphia.
"A little bit of an old man moment," Staal said Saturday morning. "I just had a calf that popped on me when I was warming up. An unfortuante scenario, but it is what it is."
However, the 2026 Conn Smythe winner says that he's been feeling good and that said that "everything has been going smooth," and that there really hasn't been any "real hiccups."
Staal said at this point it's up to how he's feeling, but he understands he'll need a bit more practice time before he feels like he's ready to rejoin the team.
"When you're trying to get back, you're just trying to check off boxes and obviously getting the opportunity to get back with the fells, even for a morning skate, is a box checked," Staal said. "Excited to keep moving forward and hopefully not hit any more bumps on the road."
The Canes are gearing up for a trip across the world to Finland for the NHL Global Series and Staal hopes to be able to play in one of those two games against the Seattle Kraken.
Rod Brind'Amour referred to Staal as a "plane-time decision," but it sounds like the plan is for the veteran centerman to travel.
"Flying across the ocean and not playing any games wouldn't be the smartest thing, so I'd like to try and play, but we'll see how it goes."
Staal played in six games this season before the injury and while he's yet to register a point, he had 19 hits and a 55.6% faceoff win percentage.
