The Carolina Hurricanes have finally landed a player they've sought for years, signing free agent forward Nikolaj Ehlers to a six year, $51 million contract ($8.5 million AAV).

Ehlers, 29, was the top free agent available when July 1 rolled around the left winger will add a big spark to the Canes' top-six.

The Hurricanes have tried to trade for the Danish winger multiple times, but it took till free agency to make that dream a reality.

There was a bit of a wait as Ehlers fielded offers from multiple teams, but in the end, he decided that he wanted to play in Carolina.

"Nikolaj was the top free agent available on July 1, and we are proud that he’s chosen to make Carolina his home,” said Carolina general manager Eric Tulsky in a press release. “He’s a highly-skilled winger who can really skate and will fit very well with our forward group.”

Ehlers is highly regarded for his skating ability and overall offensive game. He's scored at least 20 goals in eight of his 10 NHL seasons and he is coming off of back-to-back 60+ point seasons.

The winger has been an analytical darling for years too, really maximizing his ice time and getting the most out of his minutes.

His addition definitely helps to raise the bar for Carolina.
