With key veterans sidelined, Carolina’s high-octane prospects step into the spotlight. Bradly Nadeau and Felix Unger Sorum bring fresh energy and elite puck skills to Saturday’s lineup.

With the Carolina Hurricanes facing a growing list of injuries up front, the team recalled a pair of up-and-coming prospects who now look ready to hop into the lineup for Saturday's game and potentially beyond.

Bradly Nadeau and Felix Unger Sorum both got the call over the past few days as the Canes added both captain Jordan Staal and veteran Taylor Hall to the injury report.

Staal was injured Sunday and will miss the next 1-2 months due to a partial calf tear and Hall left Tuesday's game with an upper-body injury and has now been designated as week-to-week.

So with that, the 21-year-old forwards joined the team on Friday for practice and both look in line to be in the lineup for tomorrow's game against the Winnipeg Jets.

"Both of those guys, I thought, played great in the preseason," said Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour. "Just didn't have spots available. Now we got injuries, so I'm sure they'll see some action here."

"Just going to go out, not try to think, and just play," Nadeau said. "That's usually when you're at your best. Just go out there, have fun and usually the success will come."

"I gotta try to make the most of the opportunity," Unger Sorum said. "You just take it day-by-day, do your best and have fun."

Nadeau was lined up in Hall's normal spot on Friday, taking line rushes alongside Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake.

That duo continues to be amongst the league's best play drivers and so while it certainly won't be the biggest trio, it'll certainly be a tenacious one that has a ton of puck skills.

"Really excited," Nadeau said about the opportunity. "Obviously those two guys are really good players. When you get a chance to play with players like that, you want to really enjoy it, enjoy the experience, and try to help them on the ice. I'll learn from those two players and just enjoy the experience."

Unger Sorum meanwhile took line rushes on the fourth line alongside Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Eric Robinson.

The 21-year-old winger has made significant strides as he's adapted to the North American game and his extremely high hockey IQ is something that should translate easily to the NHL.

"This kind of feels like my first callup," said Unger Sorum, who made his NHL debut in the final regular season game last year. "Not that my first game wasn't important, but this is with games that matters more, so it's gonna be fun."

Both players also took reps on the team's second power play unit alongside K'Andre Miller, Mark Jankowski and Logan Stankoven.

Nadeau and Unger Sorum are both high-end offensive players, so it makes sense to give them the chance to showcase their talents in situations where they can excel.

"You ask players, 'What do you do?' and so if they do certain things, you have to give them those opportunities otherwise, what's the point?" Brind'Amour said. "Those guys are skilled guys and so trying to find them power play time when they play is probably what we need to do."
