Early on, it just seemed like the trip to New York was just not in the cards for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Despite a strong start, a few mental mistakes saw the Canes sitting in a 3-0 hole just 27:46 into the game after surrendering a 4v4 goal, a shorthanded goal and an even strength goal.

However, a quick strike back by Jalen Chatfield, his first of the season, off the back of New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield, got Carolina on the board and the comeback was underway.

After the first tally, the Isles were back on their heels and as the Hurricanes kept up the pressure late in third period, they started to crawl back even more.

"We were just relentless," Chatfield said. "Going down like that, we knew we had a lot of hockey left. We got to our game and you could see it out there. We just kept pushing till the very end."

A Dmitry Orlov shot rocketed off of another Islanders defenseman past Ilya Sorokin and then on a power play chance, Andrei Svechnikov found Jesperi Kotkaniemi in the slot for the game-tying goal.

After relentless pressure and 99 shot attempts through regulation, the Canes found themselves back even with New York and headed to overtime, something they failed to do the game prior.

"Today we had a pretty good game," Orlov said. "Some breaks happened that helped to keep us going. Offensively, I think we did a good job. Had a lot of zone time, a lot of shots and I think it's hard for other teams to play against our system.

"We need to do a little more of a better job though in front of the net. Screening the goalie. It should be like that in our heads to get to the front of the net so the goalie doesn't see it and it's harder to make a save. We put up a lot of shots, but sometimes he sees it and it's not working out well. But still, it was a good game after New York [Rangers]. We needed these points, especially when you play against divisional teams. It's huge for the playoff fighting. Overall today it was a pretty good game for us."

Overtime didn't last long as Sebastian Aho put a puck right through the wickets on Sorokin to complete the comeback just 1:14 into the extra frame.

Carolina scored four unanswered to storm back and secure an important two points in the standings.

"Obviously it was tough to go down three," said coach Rod Brind'Amour. "We weren't playing poorly, we just made a couple of mistakes and their talent got us. [Mathew] Barzal made a hell of a play on the one goal and the shorty was unfortunate, but then I just loved the way we played the rest of the way. I even commented in-between periods like if we could keep playing, win or lose, that's just how we have to do things and then the third was even better. It was a great win for the boys. They deserved it."

By the end of the game, the Hurricanes had outshot the Islanders 47-25 and had outchanced them 100-38 at all situations in a completely dominant performance.

"That's our game," Chatfield said. "We want to get pucks to the net. We want to be hard to play against, keep it simple, moving pucks low to high, getting shots on net and getting bodies in front. It paid off."

The team took four out of a possible six points from their three-game road trip and will now return home for a Tuesday night matchup with the Buffalo Sabres.
