‘CANES ISSUE UPDATE ON ANDERSEN
Goaltender out indefinitely due to medical issue
RALEIGH, N.C. – Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced the following update on goaltender Frederik Andersen:
“During recent medical testing, it was discovered that Frederik Andersen had a blood clotting issue that needed to be addressed. There is currently no timetable for his return, but we are confident that Freddie will be able to make a full recovery.”
ORIGINAL (11/6/23 1:43 p.m.) The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that goaltender Frederik Andersen is currently dealing with a medical issue and will be undergoing further evaluations.
"He's got a medial issue he's dealing with," said Carolina head coach Rod Brind'Amour following the team's practice on Monday. "We'll know more as this goes along, but that's about all I can tell you at this point."
Andersen, who dressed as the backup for Saturday's game against the New York Islanders, has a 4-1-0 record on the season and already missed a handful of games after taking a puck off the helmet in a game against the San Jose Sharks.
In response to the absence, the Hurricanes have brought in free-agent netminder Jaroslav Halak on a tryout.
"With Freddie going down, we needed another guy," Brind'Amour said.
Halak was in attendance at Carolina's practice today and said that he knew that he was 100% coming to Raleigh on Saturday.
"Obviously you never want to see anyone get hurt, but at the same time, I was excited that I got a call," Halak said. "Now I'm here and we'll see what happens."
The 38-year-old goaltender was keeping in shape, skating and working out up in Boston, where he and his family live.
Brind'Amour also confirmed after practice that netminder Pyotr Kochetkov will be joining the team as well.
"He'll be coming," Brind'Amour said. "We just make sure we have that position covered. We're covering our bases here a little bit."
The Hurricanes will be relying heavily on netminder Antti Raanta down the stretch here as the team awaits more clarity on Andersen's status.
This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
