Today marks one year since the hockey world tragically lost Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau. It is a sad day, a day to reflect and remember all the great memories of the brothers who were taken away too early. It is also a day to give back, with donations being made in their memory to foundations that carry on their legacy.

That’s exactly what the Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, and the NHL have done. In honour of the brothers, all three organizations have made donations to foundations that support families dealing with similar tragedies, while also raising awareness about drunk driving and supporting the Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation.

The Blue Jackets and the NHL each donated $13,000 in honour of Johnny’s #13 and $21,000 in honour of Matthew’s #21 to the Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation.

As for the Flames, they donated $34,000—a combination of #13 and #21—to Mothers Against Drunk Driving in Canada.

The Gaudreau brothers were struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver one year ago today. Since then, the driver has been charged with two counts of death by auto while bicycling in New Jersey.

Over the last year, there have been countless tributes to remember the brothers, including the first game of the season, the 4-Nations Faceoff, the World Juniors, and even the World Championships.

Johnny and Matthew had a lasting impact on everyone they met, and regardless of whether it is one year, five years, or 10 years from this tragic day, they will continue to be honoured and remembered by the hockey world.

If you want to donate to either foundation, I’ve included the links below.
