The Columbus Blue Jackets' general manager Don Waddell has provided an update on their young star forward Adam Fantilli and his potential contract extension.
Fantilli is under contract for the 2025-26 season but is eligible for an extension, which he can sign as soon as both sides reach an agreement.
In Waddell's update, he revealed that there will not be an extension before the start of the season. In an interview with Aaron Portzline of The Athletic, he said:
“It won’t get done before the season.”
He also revealed that there have not been any real talks yet.
"We’ve had no negotiations at all. I spoke with [Fantilli’s agent Pat] Brisson last week, and they’re in no hurry from their end."
At this point, there is no rush, but that could allow Fantilli to have a stronger year in the 2025-26 season and open the door for him to make more. With the cap set to rise again in the 2026-27 season to $104 million, the Blue Jackets will have more money to spend. Specifically on Fantilli, they could sign him to a long-term deal with a higher cap hit once the salary cap goes up.
Once the Blue Jackets get things squared away with Fantilli, it will allow them to turn their attention to other areas and address other needs. Last year was just the start of their success, and if they can keep improving and spending up near the cap to add better players, they could be a playoff team for years to come.
