Surprising offensive production from Columbus's defensemen fuels their league-leading goal count, adding a potent weapon to their attack.

The Columbus Blue Jackets find themselves at the top of the NHL, not in the standings but in goals scored by their blue line.

That’s right, they lead the league in goals from defensemen. Surprised?

According to Statmuse, they sit first with 11 goals from their back end. Behind them, the Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, and Minnesota Wild are all tied with nine. Altogether, Columbus defensemen have combined for 26 points, 11 of which are goals.

Blue Jackets’ Goal Scorers on the Blue Line

    1. Zach Werenski – 4 goals
    2. Denton Mateychuk – 3 goals
    3. Ivan Provorov – 2 goals
    4. Damon Severson – 1 goal
    5. Dante Fabbro – 1 goal

There are only three defensemen who haven’t found the back of the net yet this season. Erik Gudbranson, who has played just four games due to injuries. Dysin Mayo, who made his season debut this past week. And Jake Christiansen, who has appeared in nine games without recording a single point.

If the Blue Jackets keep getting this kind of production from their blue line, they’ll be in a strong position to push for the 2025-26 playoffs. When a team gets consistent scoring from its defense, especially with five regulars contributing, it adds another layer to their offense. Depth scoring becomes crucial as the season wears on, and so far, the Blue Jackets are proving they have plenty of it.
