Olivier unleashes a first-period onslaught, dominating Frederic in a lopsided heavyweight tilt that could define "fight of the year."

Last night, in the Columbus Blue Jackets game against the Edmonton Oilers, Mathieu Olivier dropped the gloves with Trent Frederic and absolutely destroyed him.

The fight came very early in the first period on Prime Monday Night Hockey. Olivier and Frederic squared up, and it may go down as one of the biggest regrets of Frederic’s career.

He’s typically a pretty tough customer, but he met his match with Olivier, who is arguably one of the toughest players in the league.

Right from the start, it was all Olivier. Frederic threw only one punch in the scrap that was dodged, and the rest is history. It was jabs, uppercuts, hooks, punches over the top, he was landing punches from all angles.

The worst part of it all was that Frederic had just been called out for not being physical enough, and then got destroyed in his first fight since.

As for Olivier, he had faced a ton of backlash from the fanbase after a questionable hit on Vancouver Canucks defenseman Elias Pettersson. But after last night’s fight, all was forgotten and he’s back to being a fan favourite.

It has the potential to be a fight of the year candidate.
