Columbus vs. New Jersey Post-Game Quotes

Last night, the Columbus Blue Jackets scored first and early thanks to a red-hot Cole Sillinger. But the second period saw a total implosion with the Devils scoring four times in 14 minutes. The game was essentially over after the second period.

After last night's game, Captain Boone Jenner, Cole Sillinger, and HC Pascal Vincent spoke to the media. Defenseman Damon Severson was supposed to talk to the media, but we were told he was sick and wouldn't be speaking. Below are some quotes from the players and coach.

Cole Sillinger - Scored his 8th goal of the season, and had his 9th overturned due to an offside review.

  • When you get four goals scored on you in the second period, that's unacceptable.
  • I thought we were too sporadic.
  • They were doing a good job at getting in the lanes and taking the lanes away.
  • In a 4-1 hockey game, you're going to need a bounce somehow.
  • If you play a solid 60 and play the way you want to play, the goals are going to come. You're going to get rewarded.
  • We're a team that can put up a lot of goals, that comes with playing the right way.
  • We just didn't have it tonight. We weren't good enough.

Boone Jenner - In his first game back from a broken jaw, he led all forwards in time on ice, had one shot and one hit.

  • It's good to get back. I thought I was a little rusty, I want to bring a little bit more, personally in my game.
  • I was just trying to go out and keep it simple.
  • We let them back in the game with our mistakes. Our battle and compete level went down a little bit, they ramped it up and they were able to score four.
  • We lose those one-on-one battles, they're going to have the puck more, they're going to have more chances, and that's going to hurt us.
  • The second period is what kills us tonight.
  • 4-1 is tough to come back from.

Head Coach Pascal Vincent

  • If you don't win your one-on-one battles, you don't win hockey games.
  • The game within the game is the small details.
  • We played the puck a little too much.
  • One-on-one battles in the second period, that's what we didn't do.
  • One guy makes a mistake, and it's in the back of the net.
  • Our best line was Kuraly's line tonight, their compete level is always there.
  • We had some chances throughout the game, around the net, and we just couldn't find the loose puck.
  • We were at 12% at faceoffs in the first period.
  • The dots weren't connected today.
  • I expect compete, run your routes, and be a good teammate.
  • Being a good teammate sometimes it's calling somebody out.
  • Jack has a better game than this, he'd be the first one to tell you.
  • Fantilli worked hard, he had some flashes. Being a younger player, it's the foundation of his game that we need to grow.
  • We faced a team tonight that was really good in their transition, and better than us in their one-on-one battles, so we'll need to work on that.
  • We trust Chinakhov. He's doing the right things. I think he's a guy that keeps growing his game. His routes and his ability to make the right plays with and without the puck is pretty good. We know how has a great shot.

The theme of the post-game from everyone was one-on-one battles.
