Yesterday, Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski represented the team at the annual NHL Media Day in Las Vegas.
Werenski was on hand to give some very good interviews, including giving some good quotes that you can read here.
He also did a photo shoot, which debuted the new jersey sponsor, Bread Financial.
But did they inadvertently tell the world that Zach Werenski will continue to be an alternate captain, and not the Captain?
In the photos, the reigning Norris winner is wearing the "A". Many people speculate that Werenski should be given the Captaincy as a way to lure him to stay in Columbus after his deal is over. I think, while being named Captain is quite the honor, I don't think it can be used as a bargaining chip to keep a guy with a team, and it's a bit overrated. Who's to say Werenski even wants to be the Captain?
So who's the next Captain?
Personally, I believe it will go to second-year Blue Jacket Charlie Coyle. The 1000 game NHL Veteran is coming off the second-best year of his long career and just signed a 6-year deal this summer.
Many people think Mathieu Olivier should be considered too. He wouldn't be a bad choice at all.
