Dallas Stars forward Mikko Rantanen has been officially convicted by the Helsinki District Court with the illegal unauthroized absense from mandatory millitary service in April 2024 according to Helsingin Sanomat.
As punishment, Rantanen is ordered to pay a 33,290 euro fine, or around 38,700 in USD. This is much lower than the previous report of at most 85,000 euros or nearly 100 thousand USD.
Rantanen was unable to report for millitary service as it had began as his 2023-24 season, then with the Colorado Avalanche, was still undergoing. Mikko Rantanen, like all Finnish males, must undergo mandatory service within the age of 18-28, barring any health complications.

The Nousianan native denies having committed a crime and claims he had previously been told in the Summer of 2023 that his service would begin July 2024 at the earliest. He had also believed the matter had been resolved internally as he had kept in contact with the catain at the time.
Despite this, Rantanen's signature was on the receipt of the order.
Now, the winger will look to move past the ordeal as he has been granted an exemption from completing his service due to health reasons.
Furthermore, despite the setencing, HS reports that the verdict is not final and may change.
