After six seasons in the Dallas Stars organization, Joel Hanley's time with the team has ended. He was claimed by the Calgary Flames after being placed on waivers Monday, filling a need on the blue line after Dallas traded for Chris Tanev on February 28.

Hanley has been in the league since 2015, after he went undrafted and signed a contract with the Portland Pirates in the American Hockey League. Shortly after, he signed a two-way contract with the Montreal Canadiens, and made his NHL debut in March of 2016.

He was with Montreal for two years before he signed a one year contract with the Arizona Coyotes, but he only played five games for them and spent the rest of the time in the AHL. In 2018, he signed with the Dallas Stars, where he continued to bounce between the NHL and AHL.

When the Stars were on a Stanley Cup run in the midst of the 2020 pandemic, Hanley found himself on the post-season roster in the Edmonton bubble. He scored his first NHL goal in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning, one of two wins for Dallas in that series.

In his career, Hanley has two goals, 25 assists and 27 points in 183 games played at the NHL level. He has been described by Stars coach Pete DeBoer as one of the best seventh defenseman a team could ask for, due to his ability to come in and out of the lineup without missing a beat.

Hanley was a casualty of the business of hockey, and DeBoer said Monday that he believed that Hanley was still an NHL caliber defenseman, whether in Dallas or somewhere else.
