Free agency and the off-season is in full swing! The Dallas Stars did not have a big July 1, as expected due to cap constraints. They re-signed Colin Blackwell to a two-year deal and brought back Radek Faksa after he spent a year in St Louis.

The Stars are currently over the cap by $1.7 million with 22/23 roster spots filled. This means there are still moves to be made and positions to acquire. After trading Mason Marchment and letting Evgenii Dadonov, Mikael Granlund, Cody Ceci, and Brendan Smith leave in free agency, they have some holes to fill. General manager, Jim Nill, has been open about wanting to move Matt Dumba to clear up some more cap space. It is possible that Ilya Lyubushkin could be an option out of necessity, depending on deals Nill finds himself in.

However, right now, the roster is looking a bit weak compared to the bolstered rosters the Stars have had in the past several seasons. This is the roster that was deployed in the Western Conference Final against the Edmonton Oilers:

    Granlund-Hintz-Rantanen
    Robertson-Duchene-Johnston
    Marchment-Steel-Seguin
    Benn-Back-Dadonov
    Blackwell-Bourque

Now with three of those forwards that provided a lot of offensive depth, the roster is starting to look thin. The bottom six doesn't offer much scoring contributions with an abundance of a checking, penalty-kill style forwards. Because the Stars are tight for cash, there is an option to fill some forward depth with players within the system, but that is not a guarantee. Currently their roster looks like this going into next season:

    Robertson-Hintz-Rantanen
    Steel-Duchene-Seguin
    Benn-Johnston-Bourque
    Faksa-Back-Blackwell

The line deployment could change, but on the surface, the Stars do not seem to have the depth they have had in the past. Obviously there are still moves to be made but it's easy, at this point in the free agency, to feel as though the Stars have not made their roster better at this point. With that being said, Nill is a three-peat GM of the Year winner, so faith should not be lost yet.
